Lumber Buyer

Description:Responsible for effectively sourcing, negotiating and procuring wood and related products to support all sales channels in the most cost effective and timely manner. Has overall responsibility for commodity inventory performance including inventory levels, purchase costs and service levels.
Duties:Identify material sources that are relative to the channel specific needs. Develop and maintain relationships with sales and sales management of key suppliers and demonstrate the ability and willingness to translate that relationship into a solid return on program business. Procure products that meet or exceed the quality, service, price, and related terms and conditions of the company. Monitor and report on current market conditions and future trends for the market. Assist the Category Manager in identifying and negotiating opportunities for special promotional buys that align category goals with wood seasonality and availability.
Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the processes and products required for all channels of the company. Forecast, evaluate and execute the purchase of inventory in a timely manner. Establish and maintain appropriate stock levels to support company turn, backorder and sales goals for all assigned sku’s and channels. Negotiate with suppliers to achieve favorable pricing, lead-times, and other terms in an ethical straight-forward manner.
Negotiate and monitor compliance to Rockler terms and conditions. Secure qualified back-up suppliers for key products. Provide timely resolution of supplier issues related to receiving, invoices, price variances, defective product, returns and other discrepancies. Develop RFI, RFP, and RFQ’s for designated commodity. Lead the evaluation process to ensure an unbiased disciplined analysis is done. Create and review inventory reports and work closely with Category Manager to evaluate and execute appropriate inventory strategies. Perform other duties as required. Prepare and analysis various other reports as required. Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications:Education and Experience
Bachelor degree in business or related discipline or equivalent experience. Minimum 3+ years of experience in lumber industry that would include domestic, exotics and plywood’s. Minimum 3+ years of purchasing experience.

Commodity Experience
Ability to understand and apply lumber math related to cuts and yields and costs.
Knowledge of commodity market conditions and dynamics. Working knowledge of lumber grade rules. Knowledge of lumber supplier base.

Purchasing Experience
History of strong negotiations skills in dealing assertively and with a sense of urgency.
Previous experience with MRP and ERP systems.
Demonstrated ability to effectively manage inventory levels
Ability to read, understand, and negotiate contract terms and conditions.
Ability to assist in developing purchasing strategy

Key Competencies
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Excel, Word and Outlook. Ability to multi-task and work effectively under pressure with time constraints.
Strong analytical skills.
Ability to effectively interact with all organizational levels and the public
Demonstrated proficiency in managing multiple tasks, setting priorities, and meeting deadlines.
Demonstrated ability for quick and decisive thinking and problem solving.
